When we think about Art, we think about beauty, drama, capturing emotions, feelings, and creativity.  However, Art does not portray only to drawings or painting.  There are different kinds of art like sculpture, music, literature, and photography.  Beauty captured in paper.

For those who do not know what photography is, here is your photography 101. We know how important a photograph is, it is not only something to look at and admire about, a photograph serves as witness, a memory of what has happened. A photograph is a witness to the past.  Photography come from the Greek word photo for light and graph for drawing.  Photography means “Drawing with light”.  The first photographs were called sun pictures because the light of the sun was needed to make the pictures.  The invention of photography brought a new era in the world of art.  Real images that usually take a long time for skilled artists to draw are captured in exact detail in a fraction of a second.

A camera is the main tool used in photography.  Until a person uses it correctly, it is just a lifeless piece of equipment, a tool that cannot create art by itself. When a photographer takes charge of this piece of equipment, it becomes the person’s eye and mind.  A photographer creates art by selection, he or she must know what to include or exclude in his or her masterpiece.

The camera obscura, considered as an ancient tool used in photography.  It is a dark room completely sealed from light except for a small hole in the wall.  A real image outside could be seen, turn upside down, reversed, left to right, on a wall adjacent to the opening. Later, it reduced to a small sized box and was equipped with a mirror and a lens.

Developments in photography continued in the past years.  After World War I, the invention of a miniature camera that used strips of film came in to the picture.  Development continued in the following years.  However not everybody appreciated the progress. Some merely described it as a toy, while others were happy by its small size and the ability to take a number of shots.

Today, photography is has become a tool for communication and expression.  Millions of snapshots are taken daily, from birthdays, weddings, crime scenes, and snapshots taken when you do not have anything to do. It has become a popular hobby and a popular form of art.  Photographs are shown in galleries, a prized by photograph enthusiasts, favorite discussion for critics, and studied in art history.  It has the power to record and inform.  People believe when they see it with their own eyes, but if this is impossible, the camera can serve the purpose.  It is a non-verbal form of communication and can relay messages and emotions even if there is a language barrier.

Photography requires patience, patience until the light is exact, and right. A photographer’s sense of timing is crucial.  Photographers can change perspective by using lenses and filters. They can create reality into art.

The lauhala or hala leaves are actually still used these days to
create quite a number of products such as hats, bowls as well as floor
mats. Some intricate feather work or hulu manu products are kahili or
feather standards, ahuula or feather capes, uli uli or gourd rattles,
and kupee, which are bracelets and anklets. These were used by alii or
high-ranking Hawaiian leaders in the olden times. Some products that
make use of koa wood are the oo or sticks for digging, massive
seafaring canoes, tikis, as well as other godlike icons. Wood carvings
were also created and the skillful koa craftsmen have studied for
several years just to learn the complex practice. Koa is still
utilized even now but there has been a shorter supply of wood.
There is actually no need for tourists to drop by either an art
gallery or a museum in order to find valuable ancient Hawaiian art.
When travelers explore the Hawaiian Islands, it is almost impossible
to fail to spot the ever-present artistic expressions that embellish a
lot of state buildings, historical landmarks, shopping centers,
libraries, beachfronts, parks, and even airports. From huge bronze
statues to flower or shell leis, Hawaiian art is extremely spiritual
and it is also filled with symbolisms. Travelers should visit the
islands in order to view these incredible artworks of Hawaii.
